Share your opinions on the proposed naming of the new Community Hubs in Avoca

Project Overview

Two new hubs for community use are in the final stages of development in Avoca:

  • The old shire offices, next to the Avoca Shire Hall, have been refurbished for use as a community hub or for local business needing space.
  • A new Digital Hub, at the rear of the Avoca Information Centre, to be used as a technology space for small business or start-ups.

As the new hubs are on Traditional Dja Dja Wurrung lands, Council has been granted permission to consider using names from the Dja Dja Wurrung Language that represent what the hubs might mean to us and our community in the future.

  • The Gunga Building / Hub – Proposed as the name of the hub in the old shire offices. The English translation of ‘Gunga’ is ‘to do, to work, to create, to make something’.
  • Wurreka Room – Proposed as the name of the central meeting room within the hub in the old shire offices. The English translation of ‘Wurreka’ is ‘to yarn, to talk’.
  • Balaki Wuka Digital Hub – Proposed as the name of the new digital hub at the rear of the Avoca Information Centre. The English translation of ‘Balaki Wuka’ is ‘giving to community’.

Council officers considered that these names appropriately conveyed the purpose behind the redevelopment of the two facilities, primarily providing spaces for our community to work, to interact, and to communicate with each other.
